A Guilty Pleasure

I have a guilty pleasure to admit.  Sometimes, when I need a little inspiration, I turn on the TV and access my DVR.

I watch Julie and Julia.

For some reason, when I watch this movie, I get inspired to be daring and take a risks.  I know it's silly....I'm just watching Nora Ephron's adaption of other people's stories.

But sometimes I get inspired by the accomplishments of others.  Knowing that someone else accomplished something big - or big to them - is helpful when I am stuck in pursuing my own goals.

So, here I sit, watching a movie and thinking about my own dreams.

I'm not crazy, right?!?!  Other people do this too.....right??

A typical January....

It’s mid-January, dear reader.  Actually, no.  It’s ALMOST February.  I have been quite productive these past three weeks!  My lovable man-friend is going off to play Army in a few weeks, and I must remain as busy as possible.
In the last three weeks, I have clumsily played three volleyball games, visited the National Portrait Gallery with a wonderful friend, and painted this terrible still-life.  (Please don’t mock me to my face!!)

The boy and I toured all of NYC in a 48 hour period.

And, I experienced my first DC restaurant week.
But what’s next?  I’ll still tutor once a week, and volleyball isn’t over for about a month.  But, I need some new ideas to keep my life exciting as I go back to living alone.  I’ll obviously be glued to the TV watching Barack speak in, what I’m sure will be, a riveting State of the Union address to our nation.  I’m still trying to master iCloud, OS Lion, and the rest of the Apple products I’m slowly converting to.  One of my oldest friend’s is getting married, so I’ll be making a trip to the Midwest for his celebration.  Yet, this is not enough.
I sent in my volunteer form to serve at my local soup kitchen, but alas, they have not responded.  I found (and bought) a Groupon for a knitting class, but I haven’t picked my dates to begin learning.  I just feel like there are more things that I can do at home that will greatly impact my life and those around me.
Here are some ideas on ways to keep myself busy in the upcoming weeks:
  • I want to bake more.  Momma Martha and I need to spend quality time together.  I even got this beautiful cookbook for my birthday, so I need to put it to use.

  • I would like to be a little more creative: painting more or creating projects from my hands.  Of course, my knitting class will definitely help in this department.
  • My reading and writing has exponentially decreased since graduation - maybe I’ll bust out a nice poem for my next blog.  Do you have a preference: haiku, iambic pentameter, free verse?
  • I'd like to research a nice vacation spot for myself.  Maybe I'll even take the leap and go on a trip by myself - one of my life goals!
So far, I've had an excellent January.  I love being busy and finding new, fun ways to explore my city and life after work.  I have only spent a few hours in my jam-jams watching Teen Mom; yes, it's still an embarrasing guilty pleasure.  But, I'm working on it!

Life in Progress

To blog or not to blog......

In a few months, I'll have graduated from the University of Maryland. I'll go back to being an adult. Adulthood comes with much more money, but I fear I will feel a bit empty. What do people do after work? How do they fill their time without homework?

I refuse to be the person that watches American Idol just to have something to talk about at work tomorrow. I also refuse to have children.

So, what do I do? I need an objective. Goals. And what better way to keep myself accountable is to share my life with you?!? My intention is to dive into activities and see where it gets me. I'm sure I'll fail, which makes me quite uncomfortable. Erin always says she's not afraid to fail. (Well, she says that about her craft projects.) I am afraid to fail. A lot. But, I also think I won't get too far in life without taking chances.

This is what I'm thinking. This is what I want to do:
run
cook
read
create
explore
grow - literally and figuratively
indulge
simplify
recycle
save
volunteer
learn
write
laugh

Of course, these are in no specific order. I need laughter. I also need food. And sleep. Trust me. Ask Ardalan - if I don't sleep 10 hours and have a delicious meal, I am grumpy! And Emma says that grumpy people don't like to play. Who wants to be THAT girl?

I have to warn you - I probably won't be the best blogger. I won't run that fast and I'm a terrible cook. The only thing I'm good at is recycling. I'm so good that I put all my post-crossword newspapers in the blue bin. I wait for them to pile up, and I wait so long that they fall on the floor. Once Ardalan screams, " I HATE THE WASHINGTON POST," I begrudgingly make the trip to the trash room and recycle. Wait, maybe I'm not a good recycler.

So the answer is.....to blog. I'll blog and I'll make myself vulnerable. And hopefully, I'll grow and evolve and learn and become a better person along the way.
